Mini-split systems are a powerful, efficient way to climate-control your space, but unlike simple plug-in appliances, they require a dedicated electrical line to your building's panel. This process calls for precision to ensure safety, code compliance, and protection of your system's warranty.

Voltage

While some small 9k–12k BTU systems might require 110 volts, most mini-splits—especially larger ones—will require 220 volts or more.

Hardwiring

Your system needs to be hardwired into the electrical service panel. This means it's important to verify that your existing breaker panel is properly sized and capable of handling the additional voltage load.

Understanding Mini-Split Wiring Components

A few key components facilitate the safe and proper electrical connection between your home, the outdoor unit, and the indoor unit(s).

Electrical Whip

This connects the 120V/220V power from the disconnect box to the outdoor condensing unit. It contains high-voltage wires enclosed in a weatherproof cable to protect against rain and sun exposure.

Connecting Cable (4-Conductor Cable)

This wire supplies power and transmits crucial control information between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit(s). It is typically a 14 AWG 4-conductor stranded cable (often written as 14/4) and should be run through a conduit per local codes.

Wire Gauge and Safety

Using the correct wire gauge (thickness) is paramount for safety. The thickness of the wire determines the amount of electrical current (amps) it can safely handle.

The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire—and the more current it can safely handle. For example, a #2 gauge wire can handle 100 amps, while a #16 gauge wire handles only 13 amps.

It's important to purchase quality wire that is rated for sun exposure and is "UL-listed" (certified to have passed safety tests).

Wire sizing depends not only on the amperage but also on the length of the run. Your installer should confirm the final wire sizing to prevent overloading and dangerous situations.

Wiring Chart

All mini-split systems are required by code to have a disconnect switch installed near the outdoor unit. The disconnect allows a technician to safely shut off all power to the system when performing service or repairs, preventing electrical hazards.

A non-fused disconnect switch is generally preferred over a fused one because the circuit breaker in your main service panel already provides the necessary overcurrent protection.

Breakers can be reset after a trip, while fuses must be replaced. Fuses can also corrode over time, and replacement fuses can be difficult to find.

Protecting Your Investment with a Surge Protector

Your heating and cooling equipment is a significant investment, and while manufacturer warranties cover defects, they often don't cover damage from electrical surges caused by lightning or power delivery irregularities.

Installing an HVAC surge protector shields your mini-split's sensitive electrical components. Many surge protection devices offer additional warranty coverage that replaces the equipment if it's damaged while the device is properly installed.
