How to Choose an Electronic Door Lock

From simple keypads to integrated high-tech systems, there’s an option for every lifestyle.

We’ve put together this guide to help you choose the right high-tech lock for your home.

Keyless entry locks can be installed in place of an existing deadbolt in a matter of minutes using only a screwdriver. There are styles and finishes to complement your home’s exterior and coordinate with your current door hardware.

Manual Electronic Entry Locks

Standard keyless locks require a code for entry. Multiple codes can be created and programming is done right on the lock. Homeowners can create temporary codes for visitors or contractors, then delete the codes when they are no longer needed.

Keypad locks have numbered buttons which are pushed to enter your access codes.

Touchscreen locks have a flat screen that responds to touch for entering access codes.

Because frequently touched numbers can show wear or smudging, some touchscreen locks require users to press randomly generated numbers before entering their code. This security feature ensures that, over time, all numbers on the screen are touched, so intruders can’t guess your code by observing which numbers have fingerprints.

Smart Locks

Smart locks work with mobile and web-based applications that allow you to activate the lock and manage access codes from anywhere. The app is used to add and delete users or create a specific time or date range during which a guest is authorized to be active. In-app notifications can be activated to track when visitors and contractors arrive and leave, or when the kids get home from school.

Bluetooth®-enabled locks do not require a code. They sense when your connected Smartphone or key fob is within range and activate the deadbolt when you touch the lock. Guest users can be added by sending them a virtual “key” via text message.

Bluetooth locks can be integrated into many home automation systems. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for compatibility.
