Safety, security and ease-of-access - all great reasons to install a keyless entry system in your home. In many cases, these systems are easy to install and don't require specialized tools. Even better, you can find keyless entry systems that operate on Bluetooth™ and through smartphone apps, allowing you to use multiple codes (including temporary codes), and choose styles that match your existing hardware finish.

Forget losing your keys or not wanting to give the housekeeper or guests unlimited access to your house. Keyless entry systems make keys - you guessed it - obsolete by using a digital keypad, biometrics, or cell phone apps to release deadbolts and door handle locks. Some are even rated for home security by the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI.

Keyless Lock Types

Digital keypads allow you to input a code right at the door. Most digital keypads allow you to create multiple codes and delete them as necessary, which means you can come up with temporary codes to let in the housekeeper, overnight guests and others. Biometrics keypads scan your fingerprint using optical or thermal scanning technology. They're a lot like modern smartphones that use your fingerprint to unlock banking and other secure apps. Most biometric door locks require you to input your fingerprint and enter an authentication code, which provides an extra layer of security.

Cell phone apps are typically tied into Bluetooth connectivity, which means when your connected smartphone is near the lock, you can activate or deactivate it. Smartphone enabled locks usually allow you to text a virtual "key" to your guests, who can then use it to access your home. In many cases, they also allow you remote access - that way, when one of your kids unexpectedly stops by while you're away, you can let him or her in the house with no problem.

Define Your Needs

Before you invest in a keyless entry system, think about your reasons for doing so. If you want enhanced security, you may need a biometric lock that requires you to enter your fingerprint and a code; if you're looking for a simple way to let in houseguests because you rent your property out each weekend, a digital keypad should do the trick. If you're always forgetting your keys (or locking them in the house), a Bluetooth lock might be right for you - unless you forget your phone and your keys together.

Lock Grades

ANSI grades locks on a scale ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 3, with 1 being the most secure and 3 being the easiest to breach.

• Grade 1 locks are typically reserved for commercial security, such as in stores and restaurants. However, you can find Grade 1 locks made for residential use.

• Grade 2 locks generally exceed residential security requirements. In fact, they're even good for "light commercial" requirements.

• Grade 3 locks are those that aren't ANSI-recommended for main entry doors, but they're still quality locks that can keep people out.

When you're choosing a keyless entry system for your home, keep these tips in mind:

• Look for a UL certification. UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, and if it's there, it means the product has been rigorously tested.

• Pay attention to throw. A throw is the piece of the deadbolt that extends into the door frame and locks the door, and one with a 1-inch throw is more secure than one that's shorter.

• Plan to keep backup batteries for locks that aren't wired into your home's electrical system.
